Caught in the Rear View Mirror – with Roy & HG!

This mini-exhibition features Roy and HG’s captioned selection of 31 images from the National Archives collection of Australian News and Information Bureau photographs. It’s Roy and HG’s whimsical look at life in Australia from the 1950s to the 1970s, recalling some of the things that stick in their memory.

Sport, politics, the media, show business, in fact anything that moves, comes under the watchful gaze of Rampaging Roy Slaven and HG Nelson. As keen observers of the work of those on the public stage, Roy and HG provide passionate commentary on current trends, daily events and the people in the news, often revisiting their formative years in search of answers to the dilemmas of the 1990s.

Their television appearances, Triple J radio programs and coverage of sporting events provide plenty of room to raise the vital issues of the day. There’s no doubt they’ve struck a chord, hit the spot and tuned into the wavelength of millions of Australians with their humour and natural irreverence.

In the exhibition be sure and look out for the frowning Miss Tasmania, the wall of meat in the Anzac Parade cool room and the Noddi Car. And see if you can find Brian Lincoln of Eltham on Examination Day.

The Archives collection of Australian News and Information Bureau photographs comprises more than 100 000 black and white photographs and nearly 30 000 colour shots taken between 1946 and 1971. The collection covers almost every topic under the sun, recording life in Australia after the Second World War.
