A snowfall in the winter of 1929 dusted the newly-painted Albert Hall, the growing trees and the newly-installed sculpture of 'Bellona'.
Canberra’s first public art installation, War or 'Bellona' as it is better known, was the work of Australian sculptor Sir Bertram Mackennal. Mackennal was a student of Auguste Rodin at the time the French artist had just completed his famous sculpture of the same subject, a Roman goddess of war.
Depicting the tragedy rather than the glory of war, 'Bellona' presided at the national capital’s early Anzac Day ceremonies, held at Albert Hall. 'Bellona' can now be found in the Sculpture Garden at the Australian War Memorial.
